Ukraine: The Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) has been hit by multiple drone attacks in recent weeks, causing power outages and posing further risks to its nuclear safety and security, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said on Saturday in a post on X.

The IAEA said it had been informed of attacks on September 19, 20 and 27 targeting the nearby Zaporizhzhia Thermal Power Plant (ZTPP). The strikes damaged transformers that are vital for supplying off-site power to the ZNPP.

The nuclear power plant, which is currently under Russian military control, has experienced frequent external power outages during the four-year conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi is negotiating a new localised ceasefire with both sides to allow necessary repairs at the ZTPP. The aim is for the ceasefire to take effect very soon.

It would be the eighth IAEA-brokered ceasefire intended to help secure off-site power supplies for the ZNPP.

“Attacks endangering nuclear safety and security remain completely unacceptable and must cease immediately,” Grossi said.

He said all sides must exercise maximum military restraint near nuclear facilities and their power infrastructure installations to prevent the risk of a nuclear accident during the conflict.
